Is there a practical use for this technology?

Cool! This demonstration is quite intriguing, but I don't immediately see what "I" could use it for; is there a practical use for this technology...now? I'm using it in Firefox, and it works great. Would it work in a Mac as well? That could be helpful for Mac users.

That's where I disagree. Browsing a webpage inside w4a is about 3-4 FPS.

Yes, of course. Browser tabs are soooo 2009.
Imagine you had an operating system that used tabs to distinguish the individual applications. Now you can have Windows Anywhere (or your own favorite desktop). The browser has become irrelevant. And finally, finally, "Wite once, run anywhere" has become true; not by means of Java, but by means of Silverlight.

One practical use for this is a platform for an iPad competitor product. Though it should be tailored to a touch interface as the primary input method. For an Alpha it's pretty nice...certainly buggy, but a very nice mock-up. Major agreements with SAAS providers for commercial and business tools would be great as well! Otherwise the value is greatly diminished.
